After watching Luis’s Paris top 5 croissant reviews, my partner and I were inspired to make our own Amsterdam croissant reviews, so here we go!

Top 3 (atm)

  1. Margo’s
  2. Saint Jean
  3. Bakkerij Westerbos

Tried

Bakkerij Westerbos 1.45€ Multiple choices of great croissants. Sesame was my favourite. Crunchy and fresh. Substantial, trully fills the mouth. Possibly a bit too buttery for some, but I loved it.

Bakkerij Westerpark Overall mediocre. Felt kinda stale. Not cunchy at all. Slightly buttery.

Vlaamsch Broodhuys Elandsgracht Amsterdam 2.0€ Very crunchy, perhaps even a bit too much! Felt decently fresh even though I got them around 14:00 in the day. Not very buttery in flavour.

BBrood 1.75€ Substantial, multiple layers inside. Not that crunchy, and didn’t taste very buttery. Felt slightly less than fresh, but we got them late in the day (around 13:00)

Jumbo 0.39€ More toasted on the outside than some of the other options. Mildly flaky. Not a lot of layers, not very fluffy. Fairly balanced flavor. The plate in the picture is smaller than the plate we used for the other pictures btw.

Saint Jean 2.5€ Crunchy, buttery, sweet & roasted flavor, juicy inside. Bigger than most of its competitors. A croissant with opinions.

Cup a la cake 1.75€ Very airy, light and somewhat buttery. Decently flaky, though not crunchy. One of the few with a complete half-moon shape!

Simon Meijssen Multiple layers inside and outside, pretty big, relatively neutral flavor with slight butteriness, slightly stale but it was end of day. 2.55€

Bakery Cafe Mensink Petite is the word that comes to mind. Light, flaky, and crunchy. A bit reminiscent of the AH and Jumbo light croissants. Feels a bit overpriced for the amount. 1.75€

Fort Negen Smooth inside, crunchy and flaky outside. Didn’t feel too buttery for me. Definitely quite fresh. Long queues!

Koffie ende Koeck Vegan. Smaller and lighter than many of the alternatives, it felt like less layers overall. It had a distinct type of sweetness that I couldn’t quite place besides the sugar. Not so crunchy or flaky or flaky. 2.95€

Loof Quite crunchy on the outside, light on the inside. Packs quite a sweet flavour, fairly buttery, if that’s your thing. Also sprinkled with cinnamon. Would love a bit more substance inside, but overall, a solid contestant. 2€

Ulmus Bakery Did someone ask for a unique croissant? Well, there you go. Starting with the irregular shape, which is shorter on one end, this croissant then surprises you further with its flavour - decidedly not sweet. I would rank it as neutral, while my partner as lightly salty, so if you dislike the butter flavour, there ya go. The croissant is super substantial inside, and extra crunchy outside, so texture will not disappoint you. Tanned. 2.25€

Margo’s Vegan goodness. Puffy, crunchy, flaky and most importantly, massive! Sweet but didn’t feel sugary, are they using a different sweetener? Smooth, but doesn’t taste very buttery (I rank that as a plus, but your preferences may differ.) 2.5€

Andere Koek Smooth, buttery, but flaky, but somehow not crunchy? Price is okay but this is pretty tiny compared to many other entries. Generally not a bad croissant, but definitely a mediocre one. 2€
